Ibero-American summit issues special communication on social & humanitarian impact of autonomous weapons

At the 28th Ibero-American Summit, states endorsed a special communication on the social and humanitarian impact of autonomous weapons. In the communiqué, the delegates of the Ibero-American states recognise the need to ‘Collaborate to promote the negotiation of a legally binding international instrument, with prohibitions and regulations regarding autonomy in weapons systems, in order to ensure compliance with International Law, including International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, ethical perspectives, as well as the prevention of the social and humanitarian impact that autonomy entails in weapons systems.’

This communiqué comes following the recent Latin American & Caribbean regional conference on autonomy in weapons systems, hosted by Costa Rica, which resulted in the historic Belén Communiqué calling for the urgent negotiation of new international rules on autonomy in weapons systems.
