Russian military announces creation of ‘a department for the development of artificial intelligence technologies’

Defense News reports on the recent announcement at Russia’s ARMY 2022 ‘international military technical forum’ by Alexander Osadchu, head of Russian military’s innovative development department, on the formation of a department dedicated to developing weapons that use artificial intelligence. Osadchu said that a department for the development of artificial intelligence has been created ‘in order to intensify work on the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the interests of creating models of weapons for military and special equipment.’

Russia does not support the negotiation of new international law to regulate the development and use of autonomous weapons systems and has reportedly used weapon systems with autonomous functions in Ukraine.
