U.S. Marine Corps plans to request more loitering munitions with autonomous functions

According to Marine Corps Times, the U.S. Marine Corps is seeking to procure more loitering munitions. Some $12 million has already been allocated in the 2023 defence budget to the Marine Corps’ Futures Directorate for experimentation with ‘an advanced, “fully autonomous, remotely operated” loitering munition unmanned aircraft system that can seek and engage targets by day or night.’ Reportedly, plans for 2023 also include ‘an “unmanned kill-chain” demo using small unmanned aircraft systems to further prove this concept.’

The U.S. does not support the negotiation of new international law to regulate the development and use of autonomous weapons systems.
