U.S. Space Force General says that the U.S. will have machines that make decisions ‘that kill people’

Speaking at the U.S. Air Force Academy’s National Character and Leadership Symposium in February 2022, General David Thompson, Vice Chief of Space Operations with the U.S. Space Force, said that because of ‘the speed of war- how quickly things are going to have to happen in the future – we’re going to have to have machines that make decisions… that kill people’. Gen. Thompson added that the question of ‘when, how, and should we let machines make decisions to kill people’ needs to be dealt with.

The United States is actively pursuing autonomous capabilities for its weapons systems, and developing algorithms that can make ‘trustworthy’ decisions. The United States does not support the negotiation of new international law to regulate the development and use of autonomous weapons systems.
