Weapon system

General Dynamics Land Systems Abrams X UGV

Overview:

The Abrams X UGV is an in-development Unmanned Ground Vehicle developed by General Dynamics Land Systems in the United States.

It has been designed with an emphasis ‘to be a little faster, more mobile and more expeditionary than the existing Abrams, something which could massively improve its ability to cross bridges, enter strategically vital passageways and perhaps keep pace with manoeuvring infantry and lighter-vehicles on the move.’[1]Warrior Maven, ‘Army analyzes next-generation Abrams tanks for 2030 with the AbramsX’, https://warriormaven.com/land/army-next-generation-abrams-tanks-2030-abramsx.

The AbramsX will offer two weapon systems with the capacity to be able to  fire a range of different types of ammunition types.

Autonomy:

The AbramsX will reportedly have ‘advanced features and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous capabilities’, with claims that these features will ‘allow the tank to operate more efficiently and effectively on the battlefield.’ It is also claimed that ‘the AI system can analyze data from sensors and cameras to identify potential threats and targets’, and that the autonomous capabilities will ‘allow the tank to operate without direct human control in certain situations.’[2]Defense Bridge, ‘Introducing the Abrams X: The Next-Generation Abrams Tank for 2030’, … Continue reading

A press release from General Dynamics states that the AbramsX will have a ‘reduced crew size and AI-enabled lethality, survivability, mobility, manned/unmanned teaming (MUM-T) and autonomous capabilities’.[3]General Dynamics, ‘General Dynamics Business Units to participate in AUSA 2022’, https://www.gd.com/Articles/2022/10/04/general-dynamics-business-units-to-participate-in-ausa-2022
