Namibia supports the negotiation of a legally binding instrument on autonomous weapons systems. At the 2019 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) First Committee meeting, Namibia stated that ‘we favour the protocol prohibiting lethal autonomous weapons’, and further said that ‘likewise, regulations are required for the use of weapons with certain autonomous capabilities, in particular military drones. Namibia is a member of the African Group and the Non Aligned Movement (NAM), both of which support the negotiation of a legally-binding instrument on autonomous weapon systems.
